Environmental
Fresnillo has taken actions to minimize the project’s impact to the environment:
- Relocated 21,596 plants of the plant families cactaceae and rosetophile (cactus and desert scrub) from 5 hectares of land.
- Reforested 14.3 hectares with 6,787 nursery plants.
- Captured and released 30 reptiles and mammals.
- Carried out soil conservation works, such as ditches and barriers, on 30.7 hectares of land.
- Developed a water stewardship program to reduce water footprint through closed-circuit processes.
- Wastewater from the municipality of Fresnillo will be used to reduce the consumption of fresh water.
- Plans to work towards decarbonization of the power supply.
- Tailing storage facilities will be designed following international best practice.
Before developing any mining project, Fresnillo conducts Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), which identify potential impacts and the actions required to manage them. EIAs address many issues, such as surface and groundwater resources, water quality, air quality, soils, biodiversity (including threatened or endangered species), landscape and socio-economic conditions. The insights gained from EIAs form the foundation for Environmental Management Plans and systems such as ISO 14:001.
